چکیده

Abstract. We present a theoretical analysis of phase separation in the presence of a spatially periodic forcing of wavenumber q traveling with a velocity v. By an analytical and numerical study of a suitably generalized 2d-Cahn-Hilliard model we find as a function of the forcing amplitude and the velocity three different regimes of phase separation. For a sufficiently large forcing amplitude a spatially periodic phase separation of the forcing wavenumber takes place, which is dragged by the forcing with some phase delay. These locked solutions are only stable in a subrange of their existence and beyond their existence range the solutions are dragged irregularly during the initial transient period and otherwise rather regular. In the range of unstable locked solutions a coarsening dynamics similar to the unforced case takes place. For small and large values of the forcing wavenumber analytical approximations of the nonlinear solutions as well as for the range of existence and stability have been derived.

Multiphase patterns in periodically forced oscillatory systems.

Periodic forcing of an oscillatory system produces frequency locking bands within which the system frequency is rationally related to the forcing frequency. We study extended oscillatory systems that respond to uniform periodic forcing at one quarter of the forcing frequency (the 4:1 resonance). These systems possess four coexisting stable states, corresponding to uniform oscillations with succ...

Mode Locking in a Spatially Extended Neuron Model: Active Soma and Compartmental Tree

Understanding the mode-locked response of excitable systems to periodic forcing has important applications in neuroscience. For example it is known that spatially extended place cells in the hippocampus are driven by the theta rhythm to generate a code conveying information about spatial location. Thus it is important to explore the role of neuronal dendrites in generating the response to perio...

Phase-Front Solutions and Instabilities in Forced Oscillations

We study extended oscillatory systems that respond to uniform periodic forcing at one quarter of the forcing frequency. We find a new type of front instability where a stationary front shifting the oscillation phase by π decomposes into a pair of traveling fronts each shifting the phase by π/2. The instability designates a transition from standing two-phase patterns, involving alternating domai...

Phase instabilities generated by parametric modulation in reaction diffusion systems

Effect of external periodic force on an oscillatory order in a reaction diffusion system (Gierer Meinhardt model) has been investigated. The 2:1 resonance situation is found susceptible for the generation of a band of phase instabilities. These phase instabilities, captured on multiple time scales, produces a mismatch between the oscillation frequency of reacting species. The effect of parametr...

Non-monotonic resonance in a spatially forced Lengyel-Epstein model.

We study resonant spatially periodic solutions of the Lengyel-Epstein model modified to describe the chlorine dioxide-iodine-malonic acid reaction under spatially periodic illumination. Using multiple-scale analysis and numerical simulations, we obtain the stability ranges of 2:1 resonant solutions, i.e., solutions with wavenumbers that are exactly half of the forcing wavenumber. We show that t...
